Alcohols
Alcohols in hair care can be either beneficial fatty alcohols that moisturize or drying short-chain alcohols that evaporate quickly
Not all alcohols are out to ruin your wash day. In hair care, there are actually two completely different types — and one of them is your curl's best friend.
The Two Types You Need to Know
Emollient (fatty) alcohols are the good guys. These long-chain alcohols — think cetyl alcohol, cetearyl alcohol, and stearyl alcohol — are moisturising, softening, and conditioning. They show up in tons of curl creams and conditioners for a reason. Despite the word "alcohol" in their name, they won't dry out a single strand.
Volatile (drying) alcohols are the ones the curly community warns you about. Short-chain alcohols like ethanol, isopropyl alcohol, and SD alcohol evaporate fast and can pull moisture right out of your hair. They're the reason some gels and mousses leave your curls feeling crunchy and parched.
Should You Be Avoiding Alcohols?
Not across the board! Fatty alcohols are genuinely great for curly and wavy hair — they're often the backbone of your favourite conditioners and styling products.
Volatile alcohols deserve a bit more side-eye, but context is everything. A tiny amount in a product packed with moisturising ingredients probably isn't going to wreck your curls. As with most things in hair care, it's the overall formula that matters, not a single ingredient in isolation.
