What Does "Curly Girl Approved" Mean?
A product is Curly Girl approved when it passes our comprehensive ingredient analysis with no problematic ingredients detected. We check every ingredient against our database of 500+ known hair care ingredients using an 80% length-match threshold with case-insensitive comparison. We also check ingredient aliases to catch alternative names.
Specifically, an approved product contains:
- No harsh sulfates (sodium lauryl sulfate, sodium laureth sulfate, etc.)
- No non-water-soluble silicones (dimethicone, cyclomethicone, amodimethicone, etc.)
- No waxes (beeswax, microcrystalline wax, etc.)
Our system uses a "worst-status-wins" rule: if even one ingredient triggers a warning, the entire product is rated as warning. This means every product listed here has been thoroughly analyzed and found to be fully compatible with the Curly Girl Method.
